Florida Man Blames Doctors’ Failure to Diagnose for His Condition
A recent lawsuit has been filed in Florida involving a 26-year-old man who has become a paraplegic. The events leading up to the young man’s paralysis began in June 2012 when he visited several doctors for back pain. The legal claim he has recently filed against various health-care providers asserts that a failure to diagnose his tuberculosis led to his current paralytic condition.
The patient in question is said to have undergone a series of visits to doctors, and he was eventually given a shot that is typically given to patients who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Not long after receiving the shot, the man ended up in an emergency room due to numbness he was experiencing from the waist down. As it turns out, the man, who had previously been told that he had tested negative for tuberculosis, was given a shot that is dangerous to those suffering from the disease; he also found out that he was, indeed, suffering from tuberculosis after a correct diagnosis was reportedly given at The University of Florida Health-Shands Hospital.
The man is currently paralyzed from the waist down and receives assisted care from his aunt, with whom he now resides. Doctors at The University of Florida Health-Shands Hospital have stated that there is absolutely no evidence of rheumatoid arthritis in the man’s body. The patient has filed a lawsuit against a dozen health care providers, seeking liability against them for the damages he has sustained due to paraplegia, which he believes was caused as a result of medical errors.
Lawyers representing the man in the Florida case are reportedly seeking millions in economic damages for the purported failure to diagnose their client. Medical patients who have suffered similarly might wish to consult with a legal professional in the matter if they are considering filing legal claims. It is the right of a patient who has been made ill or become injured through the negligence of doctors or other health care providers to seek compensation in a civil court for damages sustained due to medical errors. Compensation awarded in a successfully litigated case can be used to help pay medical bills and otherwise alleviate expenses associated with the injury or illness.
