Florida among states impacted by recalled beef products

Beef eaters in Florida got some disturbing news recently. A company in California has announced a recall of close to 9 million pounds of beef that was distributed in four states, including ours. This is the second recall for the company, Rancho Feeding Corp., this year. In January, it recalled 40,000 pounds of “meat products.”

The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, which has had the Northern California company “under scrutiny,” says that the meat was not completely inspected, and therefore is “unfit for human consumption.” The meat recalled last month also lacked a complete federal inspection. According to the FSIS, this is a Class I recall, which means that the meat could potentially result in “serious, adverse health consequences.” However, the agency says that so far, no one has reported any illness that has been traced to the meat.

The latest recall reportedly involves beef that came from “diseased and unhealthy animals.” It was processed over the course of a year from January of last year to this January, and sent to Texas and Illinois as well as Florida. Some stayed within California. It includes “beef carcasses, oxtail, liver, cheeks, tripe, tongue and veal bones.”

Recalls of food can be the very frightening. As consumers, we rely on the farmers, manufacturers and distributors of food to ensure that all appropriate safety precautions have been followed to ensure that it is safe for consumption. We also rely on government agencies who oversee food production to further ensure that safety. However, sometimes contaminated food still gets to consumers. People who have been sickened by such products can and should be held responsible for the harm done by their products. Personal injury lawyers can assist people who have suffered as the result of defective products to hold the appropriate people and companies accountable.
