Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz, Ocella Linked to Serious, Fatal Blood Clots

Produced by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Yaz, Yasmin and Beyaz are birth control pills that were once marketed as a ‘wonder drug’ for women suffering from severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and moderate forms of acne. Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella are all oral contraceptives; they are birth control pills. They all contain a synthetic form of progestin called progestin drospirenone. But, after 200 women have died from the wonder drug and at least 12,000 have filed lawsuits related to its side effects, the wonder drug may be more appropriately named a defective, dangerous drug.

In April of 2012 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required Bayer to improve the warning labels on the oral contraceptives to alert women to the increased risk of blood clots associated with Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella (the generic form of Yasmin, produced by Barr Pharmaceuticals. The risk of developing blood clots tripled while taking a drospirenone-containing birth control pill (such as Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz or Ocella) as compared to other birth control pills.

Yaz Birth Control Side Effect Lawsuit

Bayer Pharmaceuticals has already spent $400 million to settle existing claims of blood clots caused by Yaz, Yasmin, and Beyaz. If you or a loved one were injured by one of these dangerous drugs, the lawyers of Freidin Brown, P.A. may be able to file a Yaz birth control side effect lawsuit to help you pursue compensation for your injuries.

What Side Effects Have Been Reported From Yaz Use?

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVTs), venous thromboembolism (VTEs) or blood clots in the legs
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder damage or failure
  • Kidney damage
  • Death

Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella contain a synthetic form of progestin called drospirenone. Drospirenone is a diuretic that can lead to elevated levels of potassium in the blood stream, a condition called hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia can cause irregular heartbeats. In addition, drospirenone can cause the blood to thicken, making the occurrence of blood clots more likely.

What Should I Do If I Am Currently Taking Yaz?

As with any prescription medication, you should speak with your doctor before discontinuing use of Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz or Ocella. Because its primary function is often the prevention of pregnancy, an alternative form of birth control should be used if you stop taking this oral contraceptive. If you or a family member have been taking Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz or Ocella and have suffered any injury or death because of blood clots, contact us for skilled legal representation.
