Who is Liable for Your Bridge or Overpass Accident?

When a bridge or overpass collapses or otherwise becomes the source of serious injury to innocent bystanders and passersby, the question of liability may be difficult to solve. You can rely on our Florida personal injury lawyers to sort through the details of your case, including what led to the accident, how you were injured, and more. Our top priority is pinpointing liability and maximizing how much compensation you can be given for your damages.

The two most likely parties who could be liable for your bridge or overpass collapse accident are:

  • Engineers: Every bridge or overpass constructed must first be designed by an engineer or engineering firm. Defects in the design that led to the collapse of the structure later can put most or all liability onto the engineer.
  • Construction company: Bridges and overpassed designed correctly are not guaranteed to be built correctly. Construction companies contracted to build or assemble these structures can become liable for future accidents if they cause a dangerous construction defect.

Florida International University Pedestrian Bridge Collapse

On Thursday, March 15th, 2018, a newly-installed pedestrian bridge near Florida International University (FIU) in Florida collapsed without warning, crushing several vehicles beneath it. At least six deaths were caused by the bridge collapse and numerous others were severely injured. The bridge had been installed only days before as a first-of-its-kind engineering feat that was heralded as a new, cheaper, and more efficient way to complete concrete bridges and overpasses of that scale. Liability for the collapse is expected to be split between both FIGG Bridge Engineers, who designed the structure, and the construction companies who were still working on finalizing its build.

Freidin Brown, P.A. is currently looking into the FIU bridge collapse incident and hearing claims from parties injured in the disaster. If you believe you have a claim, please do not hesitate to call us and request your free consultation. We make ourselves available to answer your inquiries 24/7.
