Halloween Safety and Awareness

The spookiest part of Halloween might just be how often people are injured during the holiday’s festivities and celebrations. Every October 31st, an inordinate number of people are brought to the emergency room. Alcohol and drug intoxication are common, as is accident-related trauma. Children are prone to putting candy in places they shouldn’t, and food-coloring used in costumes can make reactions seem more severe. Props and decorations can also lead to injury, and costumes and makeup can make it more difficult for hospital personnel to assess the severity of injuries at the ER.

Overcrowded ERs are a major safety hazard year-round, and they are particularly bad on holidays like Halloween. If you sustain an injury that is exacerbated or misdiagnosed due to a congested Emergency Room, you may be entitled to pursue a medical malpractice or personal injury case.

Stay safe this year, not only from goons and goblins, but from injury and/or medical malpractice. Our trial team of Miami injury attorneys at Freidin Brown, P.A. can be reached online or over the phone at (888) 650-0918.

Tips for Staying Safe This Halloween Season

  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • When carving jack o’lanterns, keep children away from sharp objects.
  • Use flashlights or glowsticks rather than candles.
  • Be careful with costumes that impair your movement, vision, or breathing.
  • Take note of the weather, don’t wear a costume that will make you too hot or too cold.
  • Watch out for cars while walking around your neighborhood.
  • Inspect contents of bags after trick-or-treating.
  • Be on the lookout for marijuana-infused treats, which have become more common and often look like regular goodies.
  • Pay attention to the ingredients of the candy your children bring home; some may contain unknown allergens.
  • Make sure your little ones don’t choke on their candy. Know how to perform mouth-to-mouth and the Heimlich maneuver, and take away items that seem unsafe.
  • Keep large and cumbersome props out of reach of small children and avoid using items with blunt or sharp edges.

What If I End Up in the ER?

Given how hectic ERs can get on Halloween and Halloween weekend, it’s important to stay vigilant. Polls indicate that American doctors are burned out, which has led to increased medical errors. When doctors miss something in the ER, the results can be deadly. If you end up in an overcrowded, understaffed ER this Halloween, chances of your quality of care suffering are unfortunately much greater.

What Else Should I Watch Out for on Halloween?

There are many different dangers to be aware of on Halloween. Drunk driving fatalities went up 44% between 2012 and 2016, making it all the more essential for trick-or-treaters and pedestrians out partying to be aware of their surroundings. Fires as a result of decorations are also a major concern, as are structural collapses.

While there are risks to going out this Halloween season, they shouldn’t deter you from enjoying the festivities. The safety tips in this blog are meant to help protect you, but if you do get injured, make sure you have a lawyer on your side to help protect you.
