Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Dividing Assets via Mediation

When very wealthy couples get divorced, the most contentious part of the whole process can be dividing their assets. Splitting everything up can be enormously complicated and this can add even more anxiety to an already-stressful situation.

For some people, this leads to a nasty, bitter courtroom battle and arguing over every account, purchase and financial detail. For other people, however, property division can be handled in a cooperative, peaceful manner. This appears the route that actor Ben Affleck and actress Jennifer Garner are pursuing in their recently-announced divorce.

Affleck and Garner were married for 10 years. During that time, each of them enjoyed considerable success in the film industry. Combined, they are worth an estimated $150 million and reportedly own several real estate properties. They did not sign a prenup before getting married.

According to reports, the divorcing couple plans to divide all their assets through mediation. This means that they will be responsible for figuring out how to separate everything through open communication and compromise with the help of a mediator.

Many people in this situation would assume that it would be all but impossible to resolve property division issues on their own, particularly when there is so much money at stake.

However, if two people are committed to the process and are able to set aside any negative emotions they have toward each other in order to focus on resolving the issue at hand, mediation can be an excellent option. Not only can it save time and money, it can also minimize the disputes that can arise when distribution decisions are left in the hands of a stranger.

If you are dealing with a high-asset divorce and are concerned that a bitter battle is inevitable, you may want to explore alternatives to litigation with an attorney. With the right information, support and resources, you can find the process that works best for you.
