Florida company recalls meat products due to possible allergen

The health dangers inherent in some meat products are once again in the news. This time, a Florida company is behind the products in question. Holiday Foods, which is based in Hollywood, is recalling over 1,800 pounds of meat products.

The United States Department of Agriculture has classified this as a Class I recall. That means there is high health risk with a "reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."

According to the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, the recalled products may contain peanuts. However, that ingredient is not listed on the label. Peanuts are a known allergen. Reportedly, Holiday Foods learned of the issue from its spice supplier. The supplier told the company that the cumin that was used in the spice mix may possibly have been "contaminated with peanuts," according the USDA. So far, neither Holiday Foods nor the FSIS have received any reports of adverse reactions.

The recalled products include packages of "Peruvian Brand Marinated Beef for Brochett on a Specialty Bamboo Skewer," "Beef (Tenderloin & Short Rib) and Manchego Cheese Empanada," "Chicken Taquitos: Chicken Breast w/Rib Meat, Salsa and Cheese Wrapped in a Tortilla" and "Mango Chutney Chicken Samosa." They were shipped to wholesale distributers within Florida as well as five other states.

The recalled products all have the designation "EST. 18074" inside the USDA's inspection mark. They were produced between August and December of last year.

Consumers with questions or concerns can call Holiday Foods directly or refer to the FSIS "Recalls and Public Health Alerts" page for more details.

When companies involved anywhere in the food chain neglect to include a complete list of ingredients, whether intentionally or unintentionally, they can potentially be held liable if a consumer is sickened by eating a product containing a possible allergen or other harmful ingredient.

Because there are so many entities involved in the food we eat, it may be difficult for consumers to know who to hold accountable. Florida product liability attorneys can help determine where the fault lies and who can and should be held legally responsible.
