Another Florida company recalls meat products

It seems like deja vu all over again. It's been just a few weeks since the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall of meat products produced by a Florida company because they may contain peanuts. The known allergen was not listed as an ingredient.

Now another Florida company is recalling some of its pork products for the same reason. Morrison Meat Packers, located in Miami, is recalling over 70,000 pounds of pork products. According to the FSIS, the cooked pork products may contain peanuts.

The products impacted by the recall are "El Toro Cooked Pork and Water" and "Vida Latina Cooked Pork and Water." They were produced between Dec. 22 of last year and Jan. 27 of this year.

As with the other recalled meat, the culprit here is the cumin used in the spice mix. The spice supplier notified Morrison Meat Packers that the cumin may have been "contaminated with peanuts."

The recalled products carry the establishment number "EST. 17882" and include seven different lot numbers. Their expiration dates are between Feb. 27 and March 29.

The recall is classified by the USDA as a Category I, which is defined as "a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death." So far, no one has reported any adverse reactions to either the Florida company or to the FSIS.

While the chance that peanuts got into a spice mix may seem minor to many people, for those with peanut allergies, the impact could be very serious. That's why the presence of peanuts and other known allergens must be disclosed. If someone is sickened or harmed by an undisclosed ingredient, they may be able to take legal action against one or more entities involved in the production of the food.
